Sterling

2018 East Bay Honored Hero

Oakland, CA

  • Print

Sterling was diagnosed on July 3, 2017 with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at 7 years of age. For two months Sterling had been going back and forth to doctor’s appointments because he kept getting sick. It started with strep throat, then we were told he had a stomach virus. Late in the evening of July 2, 2017, Sterling came to me and said, “Mommy I can’t see.” The first thing I asked him was, “Did you put something in your eyes?” He said, “No Mommy.” We went to the emergency department at Kaiser Hospital in San Leandro, CA. Once there they had an eye doctor come to check his eyes. That eye doctor said that Sterling had blood spots in the back of his retina, so he order lab work, because that is not normal. We were sent home and told they would call us when the lab results come back. We received a call back 1 hour later and were told that we needed to take Sterling to the Kaiser Hospital in Oakland because they wanted to redo his lab work. I asked why and they said they could not tell me over the phone, so I rushed Sterling back to Kaiser, only this time to the facility in Oakland. When we arrived the medical staff rushed us to the back and the doctor pulled me out the room to explain what was going on. That is when I was told my son had leukemia. The next morning on July 4, 2017, Sterling started chemotherapy and the next 30 days we spent in the hospital. Sterling has undergone chemo treatments for the past 8 months. He has done inpatient and outpatient treatment. Sterling is currently going into maintenance and he will receive chemotherapy once a month. Sterling is happy because he is ready to go back to school and be with his friends. Sterling will be finished with chemotherapy October 13, 2020.
