| It happened in the blink of an eye. Mackenzie, our three-year old "girlie girl" whose favorite pastime was playing Barbies, was suddenly fighting for her life. Within 24 hours of the leukemia diagnosis, she was on chemotherapy through a portacath in her chest. Extended family stepped in and we took turns being with her in the hospital. Life as we knew it was over, but life went on. |

Mackenzie was a trouper. When told her long hair would fall out because of the medicines, she did Barbie proud—her only question was whether she’d get a new hat to go with every outfit. The hardest part was when her sweet friend, another leukemia patient, lost her fight. As Mackenzie put it, "her body just wasn’t strong enough to keep being sick, so she flew away."
Mackenzie is now in maintenance therapy and doing well. We have research to thank for that. We are grateful to everyone who participates in Light The Night Walk and raises funds for cancer research. Light The Night saves lives.
