
What is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light The Night Walk?
Light The Night® Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's nationwide evening walk to build awareness of blood cancers and to raise funds for cures. Walkers carry illuminated balloons - white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to commemorate lives lost - to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by cancer.
When does the Light The Night Walk occur?
The Greater Sacramento Area hosts 3 Light The Night® Walks and they are all held in September.
When and where are the Walks?
September 27, 2008 - CA State Capitol - West Steps on 10th Street between L & N Streets.
How long is the route?
The Sacramento Capitol walk is once around the Capitol block - approximately 1 mile. There are pathways through Capitol Park, so you can cut through and shorten the route if necessary.
How do I register for the 2008 Light The Night Walks?
Show up at the walk and go to the clearly marked registration tent.
If I walked last year must I register again?
Yes, you must register each year to participate in the Walk.
What is the registration fee?
There is no registration fee! We do ask non-fundraising participants to make a $25 donation to help offset the cost of our illuminated specialty balloons.
What is the fundraising minimum amount I must make to participate?
While there is no fundriaing minimum, your Light The Night Staff will help you set a personal and attainable goal.
When is check-in for Light The Night and when does the walk begin?
Check in for all Walks begins at 5:30pm, stage program begins at 6:00pm and the walk commencing at 7:30pm.
Is it difficult to organize a Team?
It's not hard at all! Once you appoint a team captain to act as a liaison between The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society office and your team or organization, we will provide all the materials and guidelines to ensure success in forming a successful Light The Night Team.
Is team membership limited to employees of the company?
Not at all. Team participation is open to everyone. Employees are encouraged to invite their family, friends and neighbors to be involved. The magical and uplifting setting of the Light The Night Walk creates a fun, wholesome event that brings coworkers and their families together outside the office for the purpose of helping others.
Does having a Team require a corporate donation?
Corporate donations are encouraged, but not required. Your individual team members will generate the majority of team contributions. Corporate Matching Gifts can enhance your team members' fundraising efforts. Please fill out our Matching Gift form and return it to our office if you, or a team member will be receiving a Matching Gift.
What can senior management do to facilitate building a Light The Night Team?
Management can encourage team participation in a number of ways: Sign-up for the team, draft and distribute a company-wide memo or email endorsing Light The Night Walk, authorize the purchase of T-shirts for team members to wear to promote their company's commitment to Light The Night. The possibilities are endless and the Light The Night staff are more than willing to help get your team started.
How is the money collected?
Each team member is responsible for collecting funds from supporters and either turning funds raised into the Team Captain or sending it to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. If you are an individual walker, bring your full collection envelope to Bank Day, the day of the Walk, or mail your funds raised to the address below. Please be sure to indicate your name, walksite and team name so you can get the appropriate credit for raising funds.

What about late donations?
Donations can be turned in until the end of the year. If you got started late, or receive a last minutes contribution; don't worry. All funds raised until November 29th will be counted towards incentive prizes. Funds raised from November 29th until December 31st will not count towards incentive prizes. You can even plan a fundraiser for the holidays and contribute to Light The Night!
How is the money used?
All proceeds from this year's Light The Night Walk go to further our mission of curing leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma and improving the quality of life for patients and their families. This mission is carried out through extensive research for treatments, cures, government advocacy, patient assistance programs, community outreach, and education programs.
Are there prizes for raising certain amounts of donations?
Prizes are available to those who have reached a certain fund raising level and can be viewed at our prize incentives page.
Are donations tax deductible and how do I obtain a copy of the receipt?
Yes. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent permitted by law. Your canceled check or credit card transaction serves as a receipt for donations under $100. A receipt will be sent after the Walk to donors contributing over $100.
Is it possible to check-in early?
Yes. You will want to spend the special evening celebrating with friends and enjoying the festivities - not waiting in line! To beat the crowds, don't miss our Bank Days!
What is "Bank Day? Bank Day is an opportunity for all participants to turn in any collected donations prior to the Walk and pick up t-shirts for those who raised $100 or more. Team Captains who attend Bank Day will receive a special Team Captain incentive for bringing in their team's fundraising prior to the walk. Turning in funds at Bank day will allow you to arrive and enjoy all of the fun and festivities of the evening on Walk night! Check your walksite's webpage for the date, time and location.
What must I bring with me on the day of the walk?
Please bring your walker collection envelope with donations enclosed. Remember to fill out the Walker Information on the back of your collection envelope!
What happens if it rains?
We walk rain or shine!
Are strollers, bicycles, or in-line skates allowed to participate?
Strollers are welcome, though due to safety precautions, bicycles and in-line skates are not permitted.
