Participants nationwide helped to light the autumn skies and the hearts of cancer patients by taking part in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Light The Night Walk.
At more than 200 locations across the country, individuals walked to honor those affected by cancer and to raise funds for research and patient services. Nationally, we raised $39 million for these programs. Each Walk began at nightfall, and participants carried illuminated balloons - white for cancer survivors, red for friends and loved ones, and gold for a loved one who have lost their battle with cancer - each a beacon of hope for millions of people affected by cancer.
Our local Light The Night Walk events took place in Harrisburg, York, Lancaster, Lewisburg, Gettysburg and Chambersburg. Each Walk created a breathtaking sight and spirit of fellowship, and participants were very successful in helping us to raise funds for our research and patient services programs.
"Light The Night is a unique opportunity for the community to come together for an evening of celebration and remembrance," says Danielle Bubnis, Patient Services Manager of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter. "While we honor the memory and courage of those affected by blood cancers, we must also celebrate the powerful strides we have made towards finding a cure. Light The Night is a time to commemorate those who have been lost and recognize survivors by renewing our commitment to fight these diseases."
Community involvement soared this year, with families, friends, organizations and corporations joining together to form walk teams, volunteer and raise money. Funds raised through individual and corporate contributions support the mission of LLS: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
