How can my company participate?
Companies can particpate by organizing teams of employees to raise funds and walk in the event.
Is it difficult to organize a team?
Not at all. Once you appoint a team captain to act as a liaison between your company or group and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, we will provide you with the materials and guidelines to ensure success in building a large, profitable Light The Night Walk team.
How many people do we need to form a team?
We recommend that teams consist of 10 people, each raising our National Walker Average of $150 a person - equaling $1500 per team. You can have a team with fewer than 10 walkers but most teams have many more. The more walkers on a team, the more fun the event!
Is team membership limited to company employees?
Of course not! Team participation is open to everyone. Employees are encouraged to invite their family, friends and neighbors to be involved. This is a great opportunity to bring co-workers and their families together outside of the office for the purpose of helping others.
Does having a team require some kind of corporate donation?
While corporate donations are not required, they are beneficial. Traditionally, team members generate the majority of the total dollars raised by a team, however corporate matching gifts only heighten employee fundraising efforts. Be sure to ask your employer if they have a matching gifts program - you can double your money by just asking.
When do we have to register?
The sooner the better! The sooner you get started with your recruitment efforts and fundraising activities, the better off you will be. Our major recruitment phase begins in March, but we know that some companies and groups like to get these events on the calendar earlier in the year.
Light The Night Kickoffs will be held in the summer, by which time we hope to have many of our teams recruited. The earlier you register, the earlier you will begin receiving information from the Society about pre-Walk events, online fundraising and materials you can order to help you in your fundraising.
How do we raise money?
Ask family, friends neighbors and companies you frequent to support you. You can also ask those co-workers and friends who cannot attend the Walk to participate by making a monetary contribution. Explore matching gift opportunities. Many companies have matching gift programs, creating an easy way to double your money.
In addition, the Society provides team captains with a team captain kit which includes a list of fundraising tools and activities. And, all walkers who register with a valid email address get their own online fundraising Web page!
What can senior management do to facilitate building a Light The Night team?
Senior management can encourage team participation in a number of ways, including: signing up for the team themselves, drafting and distributing a company-wide memo or email endorsing the Light The Night Walk, authorizing company-wide recruitment meetings and purchasing T-shirts that team members can wear to promote their commitment to the Walk.
How is the money collected?
All walkers will receive a collection envelope for the money they raise. Team captains are responsible for collecting these envelopes from their team members and turning it in to the Society's Delaware Light The Night Walk staff. To be eligible for team incentives, money must be turned into the Society by Bank Day. Additional walker collection envelopes are available upon request.
Can we have more than one team captain?
Yes, your team can have multiple team captains. Your company can create a friendly competition among departments or branch sites by recruiting a team captain from each department or floor. Several of our corporate teams have done this in the past and found it was a great way to generate enthusiasm and friendly competition for a worthy cause.
What if some of our walkers want to participate at one Walk site and the other walkers at another?
No problem. We suggest appointing a team captain to lead a team at one walk site and another team captain for the other Walk site.
Can someone come talk to our team about Light The Night?
Yes, the Society has several staff members that would be more than happy to meet with you and your team to talk about Light The Night. In addition, we have a Light The Night video that highlights personal stories and shows footage from our Walks.
Who can I contact for more information?
The Delaware Chapter has a dedicated team of staff here to help you with your Light The Night Walk team.
