 Omar MWOY

Honored Hero - Omar Ali, 3

Omar Ali was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, precursor b, in January 2010. Omar had a leukemic mass pinching his spinal cord that had stopped Omar from walking at the age of 2. When the mass was spotted the leukemia was also evident. After spending over 3 weeks in Sutter memorial, then starting numerous medications including chemotherapy, steroids, blood and platelet transfusions, we are happy to say that Omar is in the maintenance phase. He still has 3 years of chemotherapy, but is in good spirits and walking again. He is not a 100% healthy but we still get a real big smile from him everyday. That smile keeps his parents going every day.

Before Omar was thrust into the world of cancer, he was an average 2 year old. Now 3 years old, Omar enjoys playing with his 1 year old brother, Yousef. Omar's favorite food is cheese pizza, and his favorite color is blue. He likes dinosaurs a LOT. His favorite shows are Dino Dan, Dinosaur Train, and Go Diego Go. When he has the opportunity, he loves to go to the San Francisco Zoo, Disneyland and Discovery Kingdom.

Katie

Memorial Honoree - Katie Cramer, 16

Michael and Sherrie adopted their daughter Katie Cramer from an orphanage in the province of Guangxi, China. They went on to adopt two more babies from China, Katie's sister Anna, and brother David. At age 12, Katie was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. She completed four of five rounds of chemotherapy and was discharged from the hospital six months later. A few months later, she was readmitted to the hospital with heart failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy caused by the chemotherapy drugs.

For the next few years Katie lived pretty much a normal teenage life. She loved to read (her favorite was historical fiction), hanging out with her friends, going to the beach, spending time with her family's dog Hollie, and being a leader in her church youth group.

On April 9, 2010 at age 16, doctors discovered Katie had a relapse of leukemia. Doctors determined that she needed a bone marrow transplant. Through the National Marrow Donor Program and the Asian American Donor Program no tissue matches were found. Katie's mother even returned to Katie?s birthplace- Guangxi, China- as the best chance to find the person with a tissue match.

Sadly, on January 6th, 2011, Katie lost her battle. The next day, her mother posted on their blog with the title Katie is Free of Leukemia! - "Our sweet and brave girl was caught up into the heavenly realms yesterday, Thursday, January 6th. We have been blessed beyond words to have been her parents!"

This year, Katie is our Memorial Honoree for Light The Night. She is a reminder that our fight is not done, and our efforts must be continued.
