Our Inspirations
Julie Rando
Meet Julie. On a business trip to China in 2008, Julie was not feeling well and visited a doctor. She was told she had a sinus infection. After returning home and still not feeling well, she visited her primary care doctor who ran a blood test. The next day he immediately had her come to his office and then sent her to the hospital. After several tests, Julie learned she had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). A new mother and overwhelmed by her diagnosis, Julie's only hope was a bone marrow transplant. Against all odds, her only sister was a perfect match and she received the transplant in January 2009. Today, Julie is in remission but still deals with affects from treatment. She recently threw a party to say thank you to those who have supported her over the past two and a half years. This will be Julie's third year participating in the Boston Light The Night Walk.
Kristen Tilton
Meet Kristen. In March 2009, Kristen was starting what seemed like a typical day until she noticed blood in her urine and soon after had a bloody nose. She and her husband decided she should go to the local emergency room. After running routine blood tests, the ER doctors discovered her blood counts were extremely low and she was sent to a hematologist, who ultimately told her the devastating news that she had Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APML). Treatment started immediately with grueling induction therapy and continued for many months with rounds of chemotherapy until she was in remission and could begin maintenance therapy to keep her cancer free. Kristen has chosen to focus on the positive changes that have come out of being diagnosed with and beating leukemia. She believes she has been given an opportunity to inspire and help others going through the same battle and is devoted to raising funds to support research and ultimately find a cure. This will be Kristen's third year participating in the Worcester Light The Night Walk. Inspired by the amazing generosity, support and great success in previous years, Kristen's walking team has set a goal of raising $10,000 in 2011!
