Southern Tier Walk

Charles Turner

In July of 2006, Charles was diagnosed with CML (Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia) after a routine visit to the doctor and blood work.

Charles was started on Gleevec, which controlled his cancer for over 2 years. In the early fall of 2008, Charles leukemia went into acute phase with over 80% of blasts. Since Gleevec was no longer controlling cancer, Charles needed a bone marrow or stem cell transplant.

In November of 2008, Charles found a match. He received a bone marrow transplant on February 26. However, he developed the flu and an infection that prevented the transplant from working.

Although still very sick, Charles underwent a second transplant on April 15. Due to complications from the infection, Charles passed away a week and a half later. Ironically, the autopsy showed no leukemia when he died - Charles had been too sick, for too long.

Charles' wife and two children were with him through his battle. Charles fought until the end because of his love for his children and his family is thankful for that fight.
