FIND YOUR CHAPTER
Welcome

Welcome to the Central Florida Chapter Light The Night!

The Light The Night Walk is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's nationwide evening walk. Walkers carry illuminated balloons to celebrate and commemorate the lives touched by cancer. Funds raised will support our mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Your participation will help save lives. Please join us in our fight against blood cancers, as we "light the night" with hope and raise funds to find a cure.

Anyone can participate. Children, adults and seniors are all welcome. This is a casual walk with no fitness requirements.

Check out our 2008 Walks!  Register today!

All Walk Events begin at 5:30pm with a festival in the park followed by an illuminated balloon walk at dusk.  Great for all ages! (Volusia County is the only exception and that event will begin at 4:00pm)

Check out our 2007 Walk Photos and see why you should register today!

How Your Dollars Are Used:

75 cents of every dollar spent goes directly towards supporting our mission to find a cure.  Since it's founding in 1949,  the Society has invested more than $550 million in leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma research.  Society funded research has led to key advances in understanding blood cancers and the life-saving drugs to fight them.

The Triumphs:

  • A newly FDA approved drug, Gleevec,  has shown to normalize blood counts in nearly all patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).  Dr. Brian Druker, a Society-funded researcher, is responsible for this remarkable innovation in cancer research.
  • In 1974 the 5 year survival rate for children with the most common form of leukemia was just 53%.  Today, 86% of children diagnosed will survive.
  • The 5 year survival rate for Hodgkin's Lymphoma has nearly doubled from 40% in 1960 to 83% today.

The Battles:

  • Blood cancers are the second most fatal form of cancer, second only to lung cancer.
  • Someone is newly diagnosed with a blood cancer every 5 minutes.  Every 10 minutes a child or adult loses the fight.
  • 823,349 Americans are presently battling leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
  • Leukemia is the leading cause of disease related death in children under the age of 20.
