Andrew Barksdale, age 4
Andrew was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) when he was 15 months old. The official diagnosis was received on April 1, 2008 and to his parents it all seemed like a horrible April Fool's joke. Two weeks into his treatments doctors discovered that Andrew had a rare form of the disease and his and his family's lives became a roller coaster of hospital visits, hospital admissions, chemotherapy, blood transfusions, platelet transfusions, and medications. Four months following Andrew's diagnosis he received a bone marrow transplant. He was 19 months old. Now almost 3 years post transplant, Andrew is in remission. He is a happy and active pre-school student who loves to play baseball and soccer- things his parents prayed that he would get to do.
